Overall, if all you want to do is maximize your ability to do damage in combat with a bow, Fighter is the better option. If you want to have more versatility, particularly in out of combat scenarios, Ranger is the better option. Both options are also good enough that you can select whichever one you feel is more thematic for your character.

Actually, trying to diagnose what went wrong with Ranger: D&D 3e still really loved limited uses of abilities, like how even cantrips were single-use. Smite Evil on the Paladin is probably the worst offender. You get a single use per day at level 1, and it applies to a single attack.
