4020 Powershift - Shifting Issue. I have a 1966 4020 Powershift, lot of hours but fairly well taken care of. Shifts into reverse fine ---- when switching to forward it wants to miss. I have to shift back to reverse and then back to forward to get it to hit. Sometimes it will miss again, other times it picks right up like it should.

Clean the elbow. Apply Loctite to the threads of the R39075 seat and install the check valve assembly into the elbow. Then reinstall the elbow on the tractor. The original service info says the parts are: R39075 seat, D2361R ball, R39078 spring, and R39076 guide. When I bought the parts, the seat number delivered was R68553.

Won't hurt to check the adjustment on the rocker arms for proper clearance.The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. So, 3rd reverse is 12mph. I push the starter button and I hear the starter motor turning but the bendix does not engage the flywheel... or it is every so slightly engaging that it doesn't even sound like it's grinding.I am currently experiencing problems starting my john deere 4020 (1969 12v). When starting, the starter motor sprocket does not grab the starter ring properly causing the engine to not go around and start. The starter ring was replaced six months ago by the previous owner. Designed to run on row crops all day at full speed. Off and on hay use would not keep the batteries charged. Alternator supposed to charge better at slower speeds and shorter run times. Now that it only gets used very little we have steering trouble. Is this problem in the steering column or would it be in the pump?
