Keep in mind that although build 40-41 took a full year or so, they claim that this was only due to the complete rewrite it basically required of the game. That said, if you go into the Steam properties for the game > beta, you can just roll back to an earlier version of the game. So you will be able to continue on that save even after the update has released. It would only be a problem for mods as they auto-update using the workshop, but you said you weren't using mod so it shouldn't be an issue.
