My current plan is to build a main base on the wooden posts by the field station left of the oak tree. Anywhere central on the map is probably the best bet, but also having some smaller outposts in each of the harder areas isn't a bad idea. Personally, didn't start over, but the story did restart.
Unfortunately yes when they attack. They don't go for it directly but it can get caught in the crossfire. Yeah the rule I tend to use for ziplines is “when you think you’re high enough, add about 5 or 6 more sections of height.”.
